new stuff in shop...finally
i'm finally adding some new stuff this week to my etsy shop, including a couple of 80s rompers, a pretty vera top, and an adorable gunne sax dress. i think i'm beginning to get better at this lighting business. who ever knew photography was so damn tricky?! will be posting more stuff up this week...
"experimental procedures"-phyllis evans
our last exhibit at manichaus was entitled "experimental procedures" by phyllis evans. this is what she had to say about her work:
"I draw much of my artistic inspiration from the work of the Surrealists, who defied rationality and combined seemingly incongruous elements often using chance occurrence and automatic thinking process," Evans said. "My process of working with digital media disallows a truly automatic or subconscious approach to my work, but I try to be as instinctive as I can and rely as much as possible on my subconscious whims when making my initial reactions, selections and choices."
My affinity for the work of Frida Kahlo fuels my work for I share her “black sense of humor,” and her “taste for the gothically shocking.” Kahlo also referenced medical texts in her paintings, “to explain the mechanical part of the whole business” as she sought to come to terms with her physical condition and the medical treatments she endured. Like Kahlo, I frequently combine mechanical and organic forms, emphasizing the most unpleasant aspects of both.
"Echoing Kahlo’s distrust of the machine, my own strange hybrids of suggests to the viewer something ominous and draws upon our collective anxieties in a world where potential biological catastrophes loom large, where good science is halted by irrationality, and where bad science is encouraged by the market place, in our current political climate in which ethics go largely ignored," Evans commented.
the turn out to the event was good, even though it's the middle of summer. sorry no close ups of the encaustic paintings yet. see her work at: http://phyllisevans.com/

the 3 S's

yeah, not feeling well at all today. it happens...and it's happening now. my usual attack plan is with the three S's...that's sleep, sweets, and shopping. very female i know, but it could be much worse. sleep is the easiest one. no effort involved there. as far as sweets goes so far i've downed numerous chocolates and have finished off two half full pints of ice cream. my favorite being the chocolate chip cookie dough pictured above. and last but not least is shopping. today's internet purchases are pictured above. i've been slowly making my way to obtaining all of the kids in the hall series and i've been dying to buy a new cd lately. fever ray is one of the few new bands that i like. though i don't really know if it's considered a band. i believe it's a solo project.
anyhow, i hope my highly scientific plan soon takes affect. :) i've got lots of work to get back to!

the line up (5.04.09)

here's a few new things that will be listed this week in the etsy shop. apparently shorts are big right now. personally i can't wear them, i've got a knee phobia. i think knees are by far the ugliest body part and should be covered at all times. :) anyhow, if you don't have a knee phobia these shorts are really cute. a couple of pretty vintage blouses too, the last one could be belted and worn as a short dress (again if you're ok with knees).

utopia

We had a great turn out to Jesus De La Rosa's solo show last night entitled Utopia. People really seemed to enjoy the colorful, multimedia work. Pictured above are the artists proud parents and grandson (photo #2), the artist (wearing a black shirt & khaki pants in photo #3), and a run in with the beard helmet wearer's (photo #5). They will be making a later appearance in this blog...

judging an art show at local college
omar and i were the judges of a student art show at stc (south texas college) yesterday. it was really fun, i wanna do another one! we announced the winners just like the oscar's (i give omar public credit for that joke because he says i never give him credit :) the top photo we chose for "best of show", the next photo took first place for 3-dimensional artwork, and the next was chosen as first place for 2-dimensional artwork. i wish we could upload more than 5 photos at a time on here, it's annoying. >:( getting decent pictures was also a challenge due to the dark lighting in the gallery. i did my best. :)
